Corey Beil, an interventionist and instructional coach at the Sixth Grade Campus, has been selected as an Amplify 2023 Science of Reading Star Award winner, in the category of The Knowledge Builder.
Through Amplify, a curriculum and assessment company that partners with educators, Mr. Beil and teachers were able to create rigorous and riveting learning experiences for students. Those efforts helped the number of Sixth Grade Campus students achieving grade-level proficiency in reading grow from 53 percent to 78 percent. “That’s a real success,” Mr. Beil said. “It’s certainly nice to be recognized, but there are a lot of people who made it possible.”
Sixth Grade Campus English Language Arts teacher Julianne Pennabaker wrote the nomination letter to Amplify on Mr. Beil’s behalf. “Corey is an incredible and inspiring colleague,” she said. “He brings out the best in everyone around him through faithful servant leadership, professionalism, and solidarity. He steadfastly advocates for what he knows is best for kids and working together changes their lives!”
As part of the award process,
Mr. Beil put together this video for Amplify, which described its award winners as “educators who want to understand the latest early literacy research and how to turn it into best practices for teaching and learning.”
Dr. Jennifer Bubser, principal of the Sixth Grade Campus and Strayer Middle School said “I am honored to work with Corey for many years, and he is so deserving of this award. His passion for quality education and commitment to helping all students learn and grow is unmatched. Our students, staff, and families are fortunate to have Corey Beil in their lives!”
An ELA and math teacher at the elementary and middle school levels for nearly three decades, Mr. Beil has excelled quickly in his current position as interventionist and instructional coach the last two years. He explained Amplify’s computer-based program as focusing on three components: fluency, accuracy, and comprehension.
He credited Kelly Cramer, Supervisor of Elementary Programs, for supporting his work and former SGC Principal Eric Thompson for “creating a wonderful culture and trusting staff. We have a great staff of friends and colleagues who are growing together,” Mr. Beil said.
Mrs. Cramer said “Corey is a member of the core team at the Sixth Grade Campus in which he guides teachers through the data analysis process. Based on the student data, Corey works alongside teachers to ensure all students’ needs are met. Corey ensures learning for all by supporting both students and teachers.”
Dr. Erin Oleksa-Carter, Supervisor of Middle Level Programs, said “As Kelly Cramer and I reviewed student data, we recognized widespread gaps in foundational skills for students entering the Sixth Grade Campus. With this knowledge, Corey was on board at the building level from the beginning, learning about and leading shifts in instructional practices to meet student needs. His work with teachers and students has greatly benefited middle level students.”
