What are RELA Plus and RELA Honors in QCSD?
It is our district's goal to increase the number of students fully prepared for college and careers by the time they reach graduation. To that end, we are assessing curriculum and instruction from Kindergarten through 12th grade to ensure that all students have increased opportunities to reach their goals. The Reading, English Language Arts program is a crucial element in this goal since literacy is essential for success in all college programs and most careers.
Students are selected based on the previous year's PSSA scores, assessed reading levels for grade 6, MAP Reading and Language Scores, and RELA grades. Students in the Honors courses are taking part in an advanced curriculum designed to develop strong communication skills through critical reading, writing, speaking, and listening, as outlined in the Pennsylvania RELA Standards. Students use pre-AP strategies to read, respond, analyze, and interpret a variety of literature, including, but not limited to, works of fiction, nonfiction, drama, and poetry. Students demonstrate their in-depth comprehension and analytical skills through a variety of written genres and oral presentations. Students are challenged to demonstrate their learning in innovative ways. They are expected to work at a pace to complete a higher quantity of more rigorous reading and develop strong skills in independence, quality performance, time management, and setting priorities.
