Greetings!

This blog is for every parent of a 12th grader who is not completely sure about what their child will be doing after graduation this year, and/or would be thrilled to have their child graduate from QCHS in June and immediately be employed with a salary that is double minimum wage. If you are not sure, please read on! The opportunity is really cool and the jobs are here in Quakertown.

Last Wednesday, Jan. 10, I attended a meeting at the Bucks County Community College (BCCC) - Upper Bucks Campus in Perkasie, at the invitation of Pennsylvania State Sen. Bob Mensch, the Bucks County Workforce Development Board, the Upper Bucks County Chamber of Commerce, and BCCC. The purpose of the meeting was to announce a new workforce initiative that will directly and positively impact the Quakertown community and its workforce. At least a dozen Quakertown employers, who are hungry for qualified entry-level workers, were in attendance.

At the meeting, BCCC announced what is now a fully funded Metalwork Training Program that has already had a 90 percent job placement rate. Graduates would immediately begin earning a starting salary of $15 to $17 per hour. As you can see from the link, this job skill training program has specific qualifications, such as a high school diploma and being over 18 years of age. However, I asked for exceptions to both requirements for our Quakertown seniors. I was told that they would be granted on a case-by-case basis considering your child's academic record, class attendance, and maturity. Training begins for the next session on Feb. 26, from noon until 6:30 p.m., and concludes in June. Our HS counselors are ready to answer questions and provide assistance to your student.

How will this work? If your 12th grade student applies to the Metalwork Training Program, participates in the interview process, and is selected, we will make the necessary changes to their high school core class schedule so that they can graduate on time AND attend afternoon classes at BCCC. QCSD will provide transportation to the program at BCCC. Please read all of the attachments on my page where the course outline provided by Bucks County Community College is posted!

There are two information sessions for the Metalwork Training Program. They are this Monday, Jan. 22, and Wednesday, Jan. 31. To register for the information sessions, email [email protected] or call 267-685-4884.

This is an exciting opportunity that has the potential to change the lives of numerous 12th graders. No cost! No college debt! With 12 weeks of concerted effort this spring, a great job would be ready for your child in June! Thank you!
